Weigh-in Wednesday

I'm fat. No need to sugar coat it. No excesses.

Weight is something I have always struggled with. I gained 80 lbs when I was pregnant with M1 almost 12 years ago and never lost it all .. 5 kids later and its been a two pounds on one pound off battle.

I am only 30 years old, I should have a very long life ahead of me still .. but the weight brings with it health concerns that could very well shorten my life span. I lost my mother 3 years ago to lung cancer, and it sucked. It was the worst thing I have even been through and the last thing I would ever want to put my kids through.

So I am doing something about it!!

Honestly, out of peer pressure, I signed up to run a 5k in September, The Dirty Girl. I signed up because my friends all signed up and I wanted to be included. That's the God's honest truth.

Then I strapped on some 10 dollar tennis shoes from Wally World opened my front door and took off running! I almost died in my next door neighbors front yard. Really. I ran all of 10 seconds and had to stop.

On the advice of some friends I went to Fleet Feet, a local running store here in Buffalo and paid 110 bucks for a fabulous pair of running shoes. And while I was there, peer pressure again, caused me to sign up for a $75 dollar running class! Great, now I have spent a ton of money for others to watch me waddle around and sweat. Fabulous.

This past Monday I finished my 4th running class. But let me go back to day 1. I had to run 1 mile. Running 1 minute and walking 2 minutes. IT SUCKED. I hated every step. I wanted to quit. I cried. Did you know you can cry and run at the same time? It took me 16 mins to run 1 mile. Shameful.

I did not do my "homework" that week either .. which made week 2 blow. Really ... it was bad. Very lady like, I know. But before week 3 started I did my homework! And I did it for week 4 too!!

And today I ran 2 miles! I ran 2.5 minutes and walked 2 mins!! Which is exactly whats expected for week 4. (we have trainers and coaches who run with us, they ring cow bells to let us know when to run and when to rest/walk)

My point .. I am doing this! I have already come a long way, and still have a long way to go. My goal is to run a 5k in September, 2 of them actually! Go big or go home right? A 5k is actually 3.1 miles, so distance wise I am almost there, its my endurance that needs help. The goal of the class is to get us running 4 minutes and walking 1 for 3.1 miles.

The point of my blog is to be real. So I am just going to lay this out there!

According to my Wii Fit I am 245 pounds with a BMI of 40%. (see, fat, thought I was joking huh?) I really try not to live by the scale, so I am only going to weigh in once a week, Wednesdays, and I will check in with everyone! If anyone out there is reading this .. please know you can make a change in your life if you try. Oh, and this change was not all me, really the glory goes to God who gives me the strength to run each week! So thank you Lord, I appreciate it!

  1. I haven't said it yet. I am so proud of you. What you're doing is not easy. I was surprised to hear that you had signed up for the dirty girls run, and you have worked so hard. I know that getting together when both of our husbands can watch our kids will not be easy, but I'd love to run with you when you're ready. (If you cut out all high fructose corn syrup, the weight loss will come more easily.) What other run are you doing in Sept?

The NoBo class at Fleet Feet always ends with a 5k, its like graduation. September 30th I will be running in the Linda Yellem 5k. No idea who Linda Yellem is!

    2. I know HFCS is in many things. It wasn't added to food in the US until 1975. Ask the generation ahead of us how many of their friends were obese or even overweight. My Dad said 1. Adrienne Petty said 1. Look at a swimming pool or playground now! 1/4 to 1/3 of all children are overweight or obese in the US (according to a general statement in a study. Rates differ according to income level and ethnicity though.) HFCS is super cheap and super sweet and really, really, really bad for us. How can one avoid it? Make things from scratch. Research before you shop. Read lots of labels. It can be done!!
I believe that Linda Yalem was the first victim of the bike path rapist. She was a victim, but I am not sure that she was the first.
